MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Another part to another franchise, and it will probably make under whatever they predicted. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a great film, but I’m sure it will suffer the same consequences as other franchises that feel it’s ok to make a sequel to something more than five years after the one before it. The first Indiana Jones movies were released in 1981, 1984, and 1989. Then they waited until 2008 (19 years) to make a fourth. Now, fifteen years after the last movie flopped, according to box office numbers, they decided to produce another Jones movie. If you wait more than five years to make a sequel, it will more than likely bomb at the box office. Not entirely because it’s a bad movie, but because the writers, directors, and producers are making the movie for nostalgic purposes. Rarely will they make the movie on merits alone. No matter how good they think a script is, they will throw in those things that they feel made it popular the first (or second, or third, or fourth) time audiences saw it. Word of advice for Hollywood, if something from a film found its way into the annals of pop culture, the audience liked it then and would rather not see it umpteen years later from the same character in a new release. To be fair, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has an exhilarating opening scene. More so than the others in the franchise. After that, it becomes one “Hey, I remember that” after another. Yes, it is sometimes great to see the characters you love to come back for more of what you love. But if you’re just going to re-hash the stuff from their older movies, it starts feeling like a television clip episode, and that’s lazy writing. Lastly, if you’ve never seen an Indiana Jones film, you will love Dial of Destiny.

Extras

There’s a nice weight to it here, where I feel many of the people involved got some of their honesty through and showcase just how much they cared about getting this one right without Steven Spielberg making it (Though he is here on the documentary in full support of the film).
