MOVIESinMO REVIEW
For all fans of the Evil Dead franchise, your favorite “Book of the Dead” themed movie is back. It has a premise that could continue forever if the story is believable. But Evil Dead Rise stands on its own. Although this movie is filled with callbacks to the original, it’s not required that you see any previous film. The story is wholly explained within the context of the ninety-six-minute runtime. This is one of the best horror updates I’ve seen in a long time. Most horror films occur in the woods at a cabin or in some abandoned warehouse during the worst thunderstorm in history. The bulk of Evil Dead Rise is in an apartment complex in Los Angeles, California. The story revolves around the Naturom Demonto or the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (Book of the Dead). The main character’s son finds it in an underground section of the parking garage, now exposed due to an earthquake. He also found several albums with warnings spoken by a priest that we can assume assisted with the entrapment of the evil that consumes souls and creates earthly havoc. From that point, jump scares and actual scary moments were nonstop. And outside of the usual dumb horror characters that stand around asking questions instead of running, everything they did seemed reasonable considering the circumstances. Another smart move by the producers of this series has always been the use of practical effects over CGI. Yes, they use CGI, but it’s minimal, and the difference is highly appreciated.
