What’s It About
Abandoned on the mean city streets by his lowlife owner, Doug, a naive but lovable dog named Reggie falls in with a fast-talking, foul-mouthed Boston Terrier and his gang of strays.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Strays is a simple movie with an even simpler plot. A scraggly little dog named Reggie has an owner named Doug. Doug has Reggie because his ex-girlfriend wanted the dog after they split, which was reason enough for Doug. Unfortunately, Doug hates Reggie and, after many attempts, finally gets rid of Reggie. But since Reggie is extremely naive, he never knew he wasn’t wanted until he met a Boston Terrier named Bug. He trains Reggie in the ways of the stray, and after being introduced to Bug’s friends Hunter, a Great Dane, and Maggie, a Sheppard, they tell Reggie that his owner wanted him gone. And for the next seventy-five minutes or so, I watched four dogs curse and do some of the filthiest things I never want to see again. It was kind of funny in parts, and the plot made me wonder how they would end it. So I sat there cringing at sickening sights while wishing I was drunk enough to fully enjoy the director’s vision. Then I realized I must have aged out of this genre because most of what I saw was so gross I couldn’t laugh at it, no matter how funny the premise was. And I know if I were a teenager or a college freshman, Strays would have been fall–out–of–my–seat funny. But I am none of those things, so having to see a Great Danes dick while his friends compliment it on more than one occasion was not funny. Watching multiple dogs take a crap was not funny. Hearing dogs (or anyone) curse for over an hour stops being funny after the first ten minutes. Strays is filled with every low-brow joke, scene, and situation they could think of to have dogs act out. Sadly, this film will only appeal to a tiny group of people, and I’m not one of them.
