MOVIESinMO REVIEW

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise. It’s a somewhat original story with antics that reminded me of a female version of Superbad. Polite Society is about two sisters. The older sister, Lena Khan, has given up on her artistic ambitions and decided to marry a very spoiled and pampered mama’s boy. The younger sister, Ria Khan, dreams of becoming a stunt girl and martial artist in the movie industry. After discovering her sister’s choice, Ria and her friends devise the ultimate plan to stop the wedding at any cost. From there, it’s a barrage of ideas only a high schooler could appreciate. As an adult, Polite Society is strange but enjoyable in a family-friendly sort of way. It’s a British comedy made by a primarily Hindu cast. So I guess that means it’s dark and dry humor with a touch of Benny Hill silliness. The big savior of this film is the story. As wild as this movie is, the story is intriguing enough to keep you guessing. And by the end, you may have ultimately been acclimated to the off-kilter director’s filming style. Overall, it’s not the usual Bollywood movie. It’s something different, and in this time of sequels, prequels, redos, live-action, or the monthly superhero film, it’s always a good thing to see something with great production value that doesn’t fit the standard Hollywood mold.
