MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is back, and he’s all about saving the ecosystem of the ocean. In Meg 2, the research company, Mana One, is financed by mogul Hillary Driscoll. Expansions have been made, and the team has been digging deeper in the trench where the first Meg was found. Additionally, Mana One has been raising a female Megalodon. That’s about the first half-hour of Meg 2. The next ninety minutes consist of a lot of underwater action, including an unwarranted substation using the same tech as Mana One. Don’t forget to turn your brain off like the first film because Meg 2 is pure popcorn fun. Jason Statham does his usual martial art style of butt-kicking while the rest of his team tries to match his energy levels. Unlike the first film, where everything was about the Meg, this one has several things to divert our attention. There are constant reminders of what happened the first time, including the deaths of a few main characters. There’s an unapproved station at the bottom of the trench. There’s an unauthorized mining of a mineral that people would kill (and do) to have. The trench is filled with creatures that rival the size of any dinosaur popularized by the Jurassic Park franchise. And of course, there are Megalodons. As seen in the trailers, three megs and a giant octopus make their way to the surface and begin to eat and destroy whatever they come in contact with. This sets up a whole new set of problems for Jonas and the survivors of Mana One. Not only do they need to extinguish the gigantic creature issue, but mercenaries and a company betrayal no one saw coming just upped the action ante. As stated earlier, Meg 2: The Trench is an over-the-top action movie that will definitely qualify as a classic guilty pleasure for years.
