MOVIESinMO REVIEW

This is a welcomed addition to the title selection currently at the box office. No Hard Feeling is the break we need from all of the horror and superhero/action films that seem to appear every week without fail. And the fact that it’s laugh-out-loud funny is the proverbial cherry on top. Luckily, I didn’t judge this solely on the trailer because that would have been a horrible mistake. According to the trailer, this film looks like an updated and twisted version of every B-rated movie I grew up watching. You know, those movies with the unexplained nudity, cringy dialog, and actor that sound like they’re in a school play. No Hard Feeling is none of that. In the movie, Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) is a thirty-two-year-old bartender and Uber driver. She owes property taxes on the home she inherited from her mother, and her car gets repoed. She answers an ad to “date” the son (Percy) of a wealthy couple, and that’s about all you know from the trailer. What you don’t know is how smart, funny, and meaningful the movie actually is. While you may think Maddie is a shallow person for wanting to sleep with Percy to get a car so she can make enough money as an Uber driver to pay off her taxes before she loses her home, it was the last effort of a very desperate woman. Compared to other films with a similar premise, Maddie wasn’t the pretty woman using a rich man for his money. She didn’t get an indecent proposal to get loaned out for a night by her husband. And she was never raped, trafficked, or drugged. She only needed a car to continue her honest living and life. Things take a turn once Maddie learns more about Percy, things take a turn. No Hard Feelings is no longer a mindless gratuitous sex and nudity-showing film. Like most movies in this genre, it becomes a movie with a purpose. Unlike those romantic comedies of the past, this one had to contend with all the new social barriers. There are certain words we can no longer use. Shaming anyone or anything can get you canceled. And anyone with a camera can have you trending negatively within an hour. But throughout all of that, No Hard Feelings is still acceptably raunchy. As the story continues, there begins to be a reason to care about the characters. That’s right, it actually has heart with meaning and a moral. No Hard Feelings may seem a bit predictable to some moviegoers, but it’s good to know that not every film needs a death count to be great.
