What’s It About

When Audrey’s business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the help of Lolo, her childhood best friend, Kat, a college friend, and Deadeye, Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their epic, no-holds-barred experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Black women did Girls Trip. White Women had Bridesmaids. But in 2023, it’s all about Asian women. I just wanted to address the elephant in the room since I’m sure comparisons will be made about the Asian-influenced Joy Ride. So yes, it’s a movie about a group of friends that go on a trip together and get into multiple hard-to-explain situations. That’s about all they have in common, and unfortunately, I can’t explain much without spoiling it. What I can say is Joy Ride is a very explicit Asian female movie with a lot of antics I never expected to happen or words I’ve never heard come out of the mouths of Asian women. It starts simple enough with two kids, Audrey and Lolo, that became friends mainly because they were the only Asian kids. Through a montage, you see them grow into adults with totally different likes and dislikes. As adults, the differences in their personalities are incredibly noticeable. But this is a comedy, so adding two more uninhabited females never posed the question of how they are still friends. Plus, it’s a sex comedy, and I’m sure they weren’t looking forward to an Oscar any time soon. Joy Ride was produced to show how much fun a group of raunchy women with very little in common can hang out, have fun, and create, retain, and strengthen an unlikely bond. Overall, Joy Ride is borderline slapstick with the standard Hollywood feel-good ending.
