MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Just when I had given up on the horror/thriller category, Talk To Me renewed my faith in the genre, and after watching this film from beginning to end, I swear I had missed something by the time it was over. Great horror movies come along rarely, and when they do, you know it because you feel it. Much like Halloween did in 2018, Talk To Me is that film that rises above and sets the new standard of what a horror movie should be without being overly complicated. In Talk To Me, a group of kids get together to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand. This is apparently the new high. The rules are simple, hold the hand and say talk to me, and I let you in. No one may hold the hand longer than ninety seconds, or you will forever be haunted by the spirit you let in. The main protagonist, Mia, had emotional issues since her mother’s death. Being alienated by her friends, she volunteers to talk to the hand. Mia became addicted to the cold spiritual rush and soon acted as crazy and irresponsible as the rest of the group. At some point, it got personal, and that’s when the weird stuff started. And like true addicts, each “party” had to be wilder than the last. This is a horror/thriller movie, so you know someone didn’t follow the straightforward rules correctly. But as an audience member, you are in the dark on most things and not exactly sure when things went wrong. That is part of the beauty of this movie. You’re not always sure whose eye’s you’re seeing things through. Therefore, you start feeling like the characters in the film – lost and unsure of what is real. And just like the standard teenager, everything is all fun and games until someone is really hurt. So yes, some teens got injured, but to what extent?
