What’s It About
High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister, Sawyer, are still reeling from the recent death of their mother. They’re not getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who’s dealing with his own intense pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their house seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
It’s Stephen King, it’s horror, and it’s not something I would never recommend. To be fair, this movie would have been terrifying in the seventies. But this is 2023, and as a nation, we have become so desensitized to random acts of violence that you practically need to show graphic details of a kill just to get the average teenager somewhat interested. For example, the theater I was in was about 80% full, and nearly a quarter of the moviegoers were kids under ten. The Boogeyman was not scary. Most of the film was for the build-up to the last ten minutes if you can wait that long. Because in addition to dragging out the inevitable, the pure ignorance of every character was mind-blowing. The Boogeyman hates the light, so the smart thing to do is never get caught in the dark. I felt like a human question mark because every other word out of my mouth was “why.” Why are they over-explaining the Boogeyman? Why are kids left alone in the dark – all the time? Why are pleas for help being ignored? Everyone had a cell phone, but no one used the flashlight feature – ever. The movie is only ninety minutes long, but it felt like an eternity waiting on anyone with an ounce of common sense to save the day.
