MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Equalizer 3 is a satisfying end to a trilogy that almost didn’t happen. After seeing the first two installments, I needed more faith in this one going in. So, I watched the trailers again and read a few reviews from those critics who get early screenings, hoping to get a feel for what I was about to expose myself to. They didn’t help me, and since I planned to see it anyway, I decided not to have any expectations. I didn’t want to go in overly excited and come out extremely disappointed. I’ve done that before. Thank you Shazam2. The first Equalizer was decent as it showcased a retired agent trying to do right by those who had lost all hope or felt they had no other options. The second was a bit more vengeful but lacked character development on every level. Equalizer 3 fixed all of that. The opening prepares you for what is to come and does not disappoint. Robert McCall (Denzel) is in Italy doing his usual humanitarian style of work when his conscience prevents him from leaving an apparent mafia-style takeover. Other than the obvious body count left by McCall, Equalizer 3 showcases the toil multiple killings do to a person’s psyche. McCall has been a killer for so long that it affects his ability to relate to any emotion other than pain. In Italy, he finds real inner peace, genuinely lovely people, and an earnest purpose for his existence. The character development is done throughout the film as you become vested in the lives of several key players, including a few of the bad guys. Honestly, the storytelling was so good that I sometimes forgot this was an action film. In other words, if you’re looking for a senseless shooter, this ain’t it. Equalizer 3 is an excellent ending to a trilogy that stumbled its way to get here.
