What’s It About

The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who make history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Alright, so “The Iron Claw” is basically like a high school play about these wrestler dudes from the ’80s called the Von Erichs. The movie tries to be all deep and emotional, but it ends up feeling relatively empty and fake, just like a wrestling match. The Von Erich family has this crazy story with lots of drama and tragedy, but the movie doesn’t quite hit the mark. So, you got this director, Sean Durkin, who brought in an incredible cast with Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, and Holt McCallany. But here’s the bummer – they’re stuck in these one-dimensional roles. Like, Efron is the friendly leader, White is the messed-up brother, and Dickinson is the show-off. McCallany plays the strict dad who used to wrestle, but everyone is somewhat stuck at the same level, not evolving much. The movie skips one brother, Chris, which is weird, and it’s supposed to be all about family strength and drama, but it doesn’t quite connect. Even Lily James adds some flair as Kevin’s wife, but the conversations are all the same. There’s some style with a black-and-white flashback and cheesy ’80s vibes, but it’s not enough. Efron gets all jacked up for his role, looking almost unrecognizable, but the character depth is missing. The movie sacrifices character development for historical stuff and throws in a weird magical realism thing at the end. Wrestling fans might dig the nostalgia, but you might want to skip this one if you’re just a casual viewer.
