What’s It About
“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel’s most enigmatic heroines. The thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Madame Web is a hot mess, and not in a fun way. It’s a Marvel movie that feels like we’ve seen it a million times before, but worse. Dakota Johnson plays Cassandra “Cassie” Webb, a girl who can kinda see into the future. She ends up protecting three teens with (future) special powers from a villain chasing after them, played by Tahar Rahim, who gives one of the most forgettable performances ever. The whole movie is a blend of clichés, bad dialogue, and awkward action scenes that make you feel secondhand embarrassment. It’s trying to be cool and action-packed but ends up being a cringe-fest. The story could have been somewhat salvageable if the screenplay wasn’t so confusing. It’s like the writers tried to mix The Terminator with a superhero flick and failed miserably. Plus, the special effects are straight out of the ’90s, making the whole thing feel even more dated and out of touch. Despite having a few decent moments thanks to Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced, Dakota Johnson doesn’t bring anything special as the lead. Adam Scott also shows up, but he’s just there, not adding much. The film’s villain, played by Rahim, is so bland and uninspired that he makes “villain of the week” characters from old TV shows look good. Madame Web is like a missed opportunity and a lesson on how not every comic book story needs a movie. It’s a jumbled mess that tries too hard and ultimately fails to deliver anything memorable apart from being infamously bad. It’s a rough start for superhero movies in 2024, proving that sometimes, less is more when adapting these stories for the big screen. So, in a nutshell, skip Madame Web unless you’re into watching trainwrecks. Instead, maybe rewatch The Beekeeper or give Bob Marley: One Love a shot if you’re into Bio-Pics for something different and actually enjoyable.
