What’s It About
Gru (Carell), the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem, along side his wife and fellow Anti-Villain League-agent Lucy (Wiig), their three adopted girls —Margo (Cosgrove), Edith (Gaier) and Agnes (Polan)— and the newest member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. The family is forced to go on the run when they become targeted by escaped criminal Maxime Le Mal (Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Vergara).
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
“Despicable Me 4” is a film brimming with various plotlines, skillfully blending humor with a heartwarming family message. The story centers on Gru and Lucy, now fully immersed in the spy business. After capturing Gru’s high school rival, Maxime Le Mal, at a class reunion, Maxime escapes and seeks revenge. This threat forces the family to relocate to a posh town, aiming to evade Maxime’s vengeance. However, this move takes its toll on the family, especially on Margo, Edith, and Agnes, who each face unique challenges while adjusting to their new environment. The movie intricately weaves multiple subplots, creating a rich tapestry of adventures and personal growth. Margo struggles with making new friends in a new town, feeling out of place and uncertain about fitting in. Edith and Agnes, on the other hand, channel their energy into karate lessons, providing comic relief and moments of empowerment as they navigate their journey. In her signature comedic style, Lucy attempts to reinvent herself as a hairstylist, leading to a series of humorous misadventures that add fun to the narrative. Gru’s storyline is equally compelling. He becomes entangled with their quirky neighbors, particularly their daughter Poppy, who ropes him into assisting her with a heist. This subplot adds an element of intrigue and challenges Gru’s moral compass, highlighting his evolution from a former villain to a more nuanced character. The minions, as always, bring their brand of absurd, entertaining humor, with some even gaining superpowers and joining a secret agency, adding an extra layer of excitement and hilarity. While the film excels in infusing comedy and heartwarming family dynamics, the abundance of plotlines might overwhelm some viewers. Certain subplots, introduced with great potential, aren’t fully explored, leaving audiences craving more depth and resolution. Additionally, the shift in focus from Margo, Edith, and Agnes to the new character Poppy may disappoint fans who cherished the strong emphasis on Gru’s relationship with his adopted daughters in previous installments. Despite these drawbacks, “Despicable Me 4” effectively showcases Gru’s growth as a character. His journey from a selfish loner to a devoted father forms the movie’s emotional core. Gru’s inner struggle to balance his past as a villain with his desire to protect his family is compelling and relatable. His interactions with his new baby, whom he hilariously struggles to bond with, provide a mix of comedic relief and heartwarming moments, further enriching his character development. Ultimately, “Despicable Me 4” delivers entertainment, humor, and emotional depth, making it a worthwhile addition to the franchise. While it may have some shortcomings, the film ultimately captures the essence of Gru’s endearing transformation and his unwavering commitment to safeguarding his loved ones, solidifying its place as a beloved family film.
