Breathe – April 26, 2024

Air-supply is scarce in the near future, forcing a mother and daughter to fight to survive when two strangers arrive desperate for an oxygenated haven.

Breathe is a sci-fi action movie featuring a star-studded cast, including Academy Award-winning Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich from the Resident Evil franchise, and Avatar’s Sam Worthington. Despite the star-studded cast and intriguing premise, “Breathe” fails to deliver its promise. The film struggles to find its footing, alternating between a hostage thriller and poorly executed character development. The lack of a steady tone leaves the audience confused and disengaged, making the film feel disjointed and unfulfilling. The movie takes place in a future where Earth’s surface is uninhabitable due to a lack of oxygen. While the film’s futuristic setting and premise are intriguing, the execution must be revised. There is trouble finding a balance between the film’s thriller elements and its dramatic moments, resulting in a movie that feels like it’s trying to do too much at once. The film follows Maya and her daughter Zora as they try to maintain normalcy inside their bunker. So, when a mysterious couple arrives, claiming to know the fate of Maya’s (Hudson) husband, Darius. It turns out that the pair are not who they claim to be, leading to a fight for survival. However, despite its strong cast, Breathe is a disappointing film that alternates between a hostage thriller and poor attempts at character development. With Academy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson delivering a flat and uninspired portrayal of Maya. Milla Jovovich, known for her action-packed performances in the Resident Evil franchise, also needs help to bring depth to her character. The film’s script is also a significant issue, relying on many cliches of B-movies from today. The writing could be more consistent, with plot points that could be better executed and emotional moments that don’t feel forced. Despite its potential, “Breathe” falls short of expectations. The film’s lack of emotional depth and poor execution leave it feeling like a missed opportunity. While intriguing, the premise fails to deliver a satisfying audience experience.
