Cash Out – April 26, 2024

Tempted by what could be his biggest score ever, professional thief Mason joins forces with his younger brother to rob a bank. However, when the heist goes awry, the thieves find themselves trapped inside, surrounded by SWAT teams, the FBI and Interpol.

I’m not sure if Cash Out is enough to catapult Travolta back to the top, but this tense, slick crime thriller at least hits a modest mark. The story starts with a heist at a lavish fly-in party, where the ultra-rich arrive in their private jets to enjoy a fancy barbecue. The heist is orchestrated by two lovers posing as luxury car enthusiasts, who turn out to be seasoned criminals making off with the vehicles. However, things take a twist when Amelia, one of the thieves, reveals herself as an undercover FBI agent who had been gathering evidence against the crew’s leader, Mason, for two years. Though Mason and his team escape, he’s left devastated and contemplating leaving his criminal life behind. Travolta shines as Mason, a skilled thief planning his final score. His team includes his brother Shawn, tech expert Link, and gunmen Anton and Hector, who successfully execute the heist. However, the movie’s emotional core is Amelia’s betrayal, which profoundly affects Mason. When Shawn’s reckless plan jeopardizes everything, Mason is forced to clean up the mess. Despite their escape from federal custody, the crew must lie low until Shawn devises another score that could secure their futures. Reluctantly dragged back in, Mason finds himself in a trap set by the feds, with Amelia as the negotiator during a bank heist where they must evade capture and protect the hostages. Cash Out delivers plenty of twists, conspiracies, and high-stakes action, but it’s somewhat predictable and lacks fluidity. Travolta and Davis, who portrays Amelia, don’t quite click. While Quavo and Noel Gugliemi provide decent support, the characters lack depth. The film touches on various themes, including Mason and Amelia’s relationship, the bond between Mason and Shawn, and a deeper conspiracy surrounding the heist. However, these elements feel underdeveloped. Despite its shortcomings, Cash Out is well-crafted for a low-budget film, boasting solid production values and intriguing cinematic work. Travolta injects Mason with a charismatic, worn-out charm, but the action sequences could be more polished. While the movie is engaging enough for a casual watch, it falls short of breaking into the top tier of action thrillers.
