WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Global icon Dwayne Johnson headlines the action adventure “Rampage,” directed by Brad Peyton. Johnson stars as primatologist Davis Okoye, who keeps people at a distance but shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla in his care since he rescued the young orphan from poachers. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with discredited geneticist Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
When I heard a movie was being produced based on a 1986 video game, I thought it was fake news. There was no way anybody would make another video game movie. Especially the one about three giant animals climbing and destroying buildings. Maybe they thought no one would know since the game was released 32 years ago. Well, sorry for your bad luck, we remembered it. Guess what? It’s not a bad movie. Dwayne Johnson is so likable as a primatologist named Davis Okoye and George; his albino gorilla friend matches his energy and attitude. The story starts out ok but kicks in when George grows up after exposure to an experimental chemical. Multiple agencies get involved, and blame gets passed around. Two more animals had been affected, and now they’re all going to Chicago. Somewhere during the trip to Chicago, things got really campy. That’s not a bad thing, but it was very noticeable. As time passed, I realized just how fun and entertaining this movie was. It had a little drama, a little comedy, a little sass, and a lot of action. The acting was on point, the special effects were terrific, and it’s rated PG-13, so you can take the kids…older than 13.
