MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Acrimony is your classic Tyler Perry male bashing movie and it is just what the title says. Bitterness, anger, hatred, resentment, ill feeling, it’s all there plus more. Acrimony is the story of  Melinda Gayle and Melinda Gayle. All other characters are there to support and/or encourage her mood. This story has Melinda painfully telling her life story because according to her, she was treated so horribly, everything that has happened and continues to happen to her is someone else’s fault. By her words, she married the perfect guy but also the wrong guy. Melinda trusts him completely, but she can’t trust him at all. She stayed with him for far too long but also not long enough. Her sisters love her and want the best for, but they also hate every decision she has ever made. And no one will ever understand what she’s going through because they were not there. That’s if you don’t count her sisters, her sister’s husbands, Melinda’s husband, several people in law enforcement, co-workers, friends and the random people on the street. Other than those few people, no one knows what Melinda is going through.  Honestly, Taraji P. Henson’s character (Melinda) is very believable and I, unfortunately, know women that act just like her. She is a scorned, bitter, jealous, short-tempered woman with low self-esteem with different people feeding her ill-information. Acrimony is not a bad movie, there are just too many negative things happening to one person for the entire length of the film. Damn, can a brother get a break? I didn’t hate this movie, but I didn’t love it either (I know I sound like Melinda). It was like watching Kunta Kinte’ getting his toes chopped off over and over again. I really wanted to love this rated “R”  movie, but because it was so depressing, I’m not even sure I liked it that much . . .or maybe I did.
