MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I recently watched “In a Violent Nature” and found it a film with much potential but ultimately fell short in its execution. The story follows Johnny, a resurrected character, when a priceless family artifact is stolen, which has been keeping his evil at bay. Once it’s removed, Johnny becomes a relentless force, seeking to retrieve it at any cost. The film depicts Johnny’s journey through the forest as he slowly and methodically hunts down his victims. While the film attempts to reinvent the slasher genre by portraying Johnny as a new icon of terror, it lacks the necessary scare factor and immersive quality. The film’s pacing is slow, with extensive scenes of Johnny wandering through the forest, which can test the audience’s patience. Additionally, the absence of a musical score diminishes the essential tension of a slasher movie. The plot, set in remote mining towns of northern Ontario, revolves around Johnny’s pursuit of a group of city kids who have disturbed his grave. The film aims to invert the expectations of the slasher genre by using its wilderness setting as a character and emphasizing its ambient atmosphere. However, the execution falls flat, and the film fails to deliver on its potential. Despite its beautiful shots of the wilderness and its attempt to highlight the inevitability of fate through Johnny’s pursuit of his victims, “In a Violent Nature” ultimately leaves much to be desired. While it has the potential to be a compelling addition to the slasher genre, the film’s shortcomings make it a less entertaining watch.
