The Last Breath – July 26, 2024

A group of old college friends reunite on a Caribbean scuba diving trip exploring the wreckage of a WWII battleship and find themselves trapped inside the underwater labyrinth of rusted metal surrounded by great white sharks.

I hope this is the last shark-related film because, at this point, it’s just sad. The Last Breath left me feeling disappointed. It takes place in the clear waters of the British Virgin Islands, and it’s about a bunch of friends who go down there to snorkel a WWII ship that sank. Actually, it is about these friends who find a great white shark in the wreck they are exploring. Then there are these really dramatic and, at times, incredibly retarded decisions. The film’s premise had potential, showcasing a more realistic setting and grounded storytelling due to budget constraints. However, the execution fell short. Those characters really got on my nerves, and they didn’t seem to act at all like real people, especially in the face of danger. Oh, and the whole romantic subplot between those two characters just seemed so contrived and melodramatic. One of my complaints about the movie was that the shark was facing that direction. The CGI effects for the shark were poorly done, and the creature appeared only halfway through the film, failing to build up the suspense effectively. Then, when the shark finally does show up, it doesn’t exactly swim in a believable manner; it almost swims like a cartoon, and it just diminishes all the suspense buildup. The only notable performance came from Julian Sands, who played an injured diver with a compelling on-screen presence. However, the rest of the characters lacked depth. They acted in ways that forced them to drive the plot forward, making it difficult to connect with their experiences. Well, The Last Breath started out pretty good, but it really didn’t make for a very suspenseful shark movie. There wasn’t any real bite to it, and it never even came close to actually building that fear and suspense. That just felt like a lost opportunity for an extraordinary tale of underwater survival against a worthy adversary, like the great white shark. Overall, The Last Breath left me feeling underwhelmed and even slightly irritated at times due to its lackluster execution and unconvincing portrayal of the shark. Although it tried to base the story on some type of reality, the movie just seemed too familiar and ordinary, and it did not meet the expectations of a tremendously suspenseful shark movie.

OUR RATING – A SHARK FIN 4
