MOVIESinMO REVIEW
So I just watched this new horror movie, “Home Sweet Home Rebirth,” last weekend, and wow, what a disappointment! It’s based on some Thai video game that might be good (I’ve never played it), but this movie version? Total disaster. The story basically follows this cop named Jake (played by William Moseley – you might remember him as Peter from those old Narnia movies). He goes to Bangkok with his wife Prang (Urassaya Sperbund) and their daughter Loo for what should be a nice family vacation. But of course, things go south when some demon breaks through into our world. Typical horror movie stuff, right? The first 20 minutes are painfully slow – just boring tourist shots of them walking around Bangkok. Honestly, it felt like I was watching someone’s vacation slideshow. Did Thailand’s tourism board help pay for this movie or something? The action finally starts when Jake runs into this possessed bad guy named Mek (played by Michele Morrone) at a mall. From there, half of Bangkok gets possessed, and Jake gets separated from his family. His wife and kid end up on a city bus trying not to get killed by crazy possessed people while this giant fire demon (with the WORST CGI I’ve seen in years) slowly stomps through the city. I kept falling asleep during this movie – it literally took me over five hours to finish because I had to keep rewinding to see what I missed! Not that I missed much… The directors threw in random stuff from Buddhism, pagan myths, and every horror cliché you can think of. The only decent part was Urassaya Sperbund’s performance as Prang. She actually seemed like she was trying, unlike everyone else. The acting is beyond terrible. That fake bald monk character? Cringe. The little kid? Over-acting to the max. And I don’t even want to talk about the villain with a bizarre fake accent that makes him sound like he’s trying WAY too hard to be scary. Plenty of times, you’re just thinking, “Nobody would EVER do that in real life!” Like when they split up in the dark building full of demons? Really? The special effects budget must have been huge, but they should have spent some of that money on acting classes or a better script. They should’ve learned from movies like “Cloverfield” or “Monster Hunter” that knew how to do creature features right. I got fooled by the trailer on YouTube, which actually looked pretty cool. Big mistake! Even during scenes where Bangkok is supposedly being destroyed, the actors look bored, like they’re just waiting for their paycheck. There’s zero logic to anything that happens. No explanation for why the demon shows up or how the possession works. Nothing makes sense! Do yourself a favor and skip this one. I suffered through it, so you don’t have to. There are plenty of good horror movies out there – this definitely isn’t one of them. Trust me, this movie has absolutely ZERO redeeming qualities. I want my two hours back!
