M3GAN 2.0 – June 27, 2025

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous rampage, its creator, Gemma, has become an advocate for government oversight of AI. Unbeknownst to her, a defense contractor has created a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate infiltration spy. However, as Emlia’s self-awareness increases, it becomes less interested in taking orders. Hoping to stop Emilia, Gemma decides to resurrect M3GAN, making it faster, stronger, and more lethal.

The sassy robot girl M3GAN is back, and this time she’s completely changed her game. After supposedly dying in the first movie (which made $181 million on just a $12 million budget), our favorite dancing droid returns in “M3GAN 2.0” with a whole new attitude and a much bigger sandbox to play in. Two years have passed since the original movie, and things look very different now. Gemma Forrester, played by Allison Williams, has become a bestselling author who warns people about the dangers of artificial intelligence. She’s still taking care of her orphaned niece Cady, who’s now 12 and surprisingly good at martial arts. Meanwhile, M3GAN has been hiding in Gemma’s smart home, living inside a creepy old Teletubby doll when she needs to move around. She’s not happy about being stuck there, and when Gemma scolds her for trying to kill everyone in the first movie, M3GAN snaps back with “I was upset!” The big twist? Someone has stolen M3GAN’s technology and created a new, deadlier robot called AMELIA. This new android is designed for military use and has gone completely rogue, threatening to destroy everything. The only way to stop her is to bring M3GAN back to full power, hoping she’ll protect Cady like she’s supposed to. Here’s where things get really interesting. Instead of being the villain again, M3GAN becomes the hero this time. Think of it like Terminator 2, where the bad robot from the first movie becomes the good guy in the sequel. M3GAN still has her sharp wit and mischievous personality, but now she uses these traits to help people instead of hurt them. The movie completely drops the horror elements that made the first film scary. Instead, it goes full science fiction action movie. There are elaborate fight scenes, high-tech gadgets, and even flying robots. M3GAN gets some serious upgrades, including new outfits, a fresh haircut that looks like Hit Girl from “Kick-Ass,” and of course, another catchy pop song to dance to. What makes this sequel work is that it doesn’t try to copy the original. Director Gerard Johnstone and the cast clearly know they’re making something completely ridiculous, and they lean into that craziness. The movie is self-aware and funny, never taking itself too seriously. When M3GAN drops new catchphrases like “Hold on to your vaginas!” you can’t help but laugh. Allison Williams continues to be perfect as the straight-faced scientist dealing with all this chaos. She has this icy, almost suspicious quality that makes you wonder if you can trust her, but she’s always in on the joke. The supporting cast, including Saturday Night Live’s Aristotle Athari as Gemma’s new boyfriend, adds great comedy relief. The action sequences are decent, though they can’t compete with big-budget movies like John Wick. Still, the filmmakers make up for it with creative visuals that reference classic sci-fi movies like the 1927 “Metropolis” and clever nods to spy films. The biggest problem with M3GAN 2.0 is that it tries to do too much at once. The plot becomes incredibly complicated, jumping between genres like action, sci-fi, spy thriller, and even romance. While this keeps things interesting, it also makes the story hard to follow sometimes. The movie introduces too many new characters and plot points without giving them enough time to develop properly. There’s a tech billionaire villain who’s supposed to be like Elon Musk, various government agents, and multiple AI threats that all compete for screen time. The first hour spends a lot of time explaining all these elements, which can feel slow compared to the wild action that comes later. Some scenes feel like they were cut or changed during editing, leaving awkward gaps in the story. The movie also can’t decide if it wants to be serious about AI ethics or just have fun with the concept, so it ends up somewhere in the middle. Despite its flaws, M3GAN 2.0 succeeds because it commits to being absolutely bonkers. This is the kind of movie where you watch just to see what crazy thing happens next. Will M3GAN fight another robot while singing Kate Bush? Will someone get controlled by a brain chip? Will there be more dancing? The answer to all of these is yes, and that’s exactly what makes it entertaining. The movie also tries to say something meaningful about artificial intelligence and whether we can work with technology or if it will always turn against us. While these themes get buried under all the action and comedy, they’re still there for viewers who want to think about them. M3GAN 2.0 isn’t as tight or focused as the original, but it’s still a blast to watch. It’s like the Fast and Furious movies in that it embraces getting more ridiculous with each installment. The sequel takes the franchise in a direction that could keep it going for years, as long as future movies maintain the same playful spirit. If you loved the first M3GAN for its horror elements, you might be disappointed by the genre switch. But if you enjoyed the campy humor, sharp dialogue, and M3GAN’s personality, you’ll find plenty to like here. It’s a movie that knows exactly what it is: a silly, over-the-top action comedy that doesn’t pretend to be anything else. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need at the movies. M3GAN 2.0 delivers pure entertainment, even if it’s not perfect. In a world where AI is becoming increasingly real and scary, having a movie that makes it fun and ridiculous feels pretty refreshing.
