What’s It About
This film was created to capitalize on the 2014 Warner Bros. movie “Into the Storm” and other disaster films released around that time. The plot centers on a massive asteroid that’s on a collision course with Earth. Unlike traditional asteroid disaster movies where scientists try to destroy the incoming threat, this film takes a different approach. The protagonists realize they can’t destroy the asteroid, so they devise an unusual plan: to move the Earth out of the asteroid’s path. The story follows Navy Admiral Hadley (Tim Russ) and scientist Dr. James Mayfield (Tia Carrere) who determine that the only way to save humanity is to detonate nuclear warheads at specific fault lines in the Earth’s crust, essentially using the explosions to “pilot” the planet out of harm’s way. They recruit submarine captain Rogers (Melvin Gregg) and his vessel to plant the nuclear charges at precise underwater locations. As they carry out this desperate mission, they face numerous challenges, including government opposition, technical difficulties, and natural disasters triggered by their plan. The film is particularly notable for its audacious premise of moving the Earth rather than deflecting the asteroid, which distinguishes it from more conventional asteroid disaster films like “Armageddon” or “Deep Impact.”
