MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Right from the start, we get to see how the relationship between Leilani (Issa Rae) and Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) came to be. Immediately afterward, we see the decline, or at least what would be the end of most couples. The constant banter between Leilani and Jibran was similar to an old couple tired of each other after decades of marriage. Oddly enough, they were not together that long AND not married. So as funny as it was, it was also bizarre to see them arguing but staying together knowing they didn’t need to. Once the movie gets to the parts everyone has seen in the trailers, things become a bit more hectic as the comedy has a sort of nineties feel to it. That’s not a bad thing but more of an observation to let you know The Lovebirds never takes itself too seriously. That is also a warning for those wondering what to expect from this film. Let me put it in perspective for you. I mentioned earlier this movie has the nineties feel to it. Major Payne, Sister Act, and Half Baked were movies of the nineties that were very funny for that time, and if you see them today, you might give them a pity laugh. That’s the feeling you get when you watch The Lovebirds. It was funny but. . . .That’s what you will say while watching this movie. It definitely has a nostalgic feel, and if that’s what you’re looking for, The Lovebirds is the movie for you.
