What’s it About
Academy Award winner Russell Crowe stars in Unhinged, a timely psychological thriller that explores the fragile balance of a society pushed to the edge, taking something we’ve all experienced – road rage – to an unpredictable and terrifying conclusion. Rachel (Caren Pistorius) is running late to work when she has an altercation at a traffic light with a stranger (Crowe) whose life has left him feeling powerless and invisible. Soon, Rachel finds herself and everyone she loves the target of a man who decides to make one last mark upon the world by teaching her a series of deadly lessons. What follows is a dangerous game of cat and mouse that proves you never know just how close you are to someone who is about to become unhinged.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
This is one of those times where the title says it all. If the word road-rage were added to it, you would know the whole movie. I think Russell Crowe is a great actor but having decided to star in a film about road rage was not the best decision. It’s something that has been done multiple times before. Death Proof, Joy Ride, The Hitcher, Black Dog, the list goes on and on. So what makes Unhinged different? The way it starts is a bit unsettling. Tom (Russell Crowe) was having an interesting day. The altercation he had with a female motorist (Caren Pistorius) just happened to be the thing that put him over the edge. It’s the perfect example of “Treat others the way you would like to be treated” because the next thing you say or do could be the very thing that gets you killed. That’s the plot and what happened in this movie. It could have been avoided by a simple “sorry,” but that would have been too easy. At this point, it doesn’t matter what happens to either person. Tom is having a bad day, and anything could push him over the edge. Rachel, the female motorist, is having a bad day, and, well, you get the point. I don’t like Tom because of his situation, but now I don’t like Rachel because she is an ass. So who do I cheer for in this nearly predictable film? Answer – nobody. Watching Unhinged was like watching a campy horror movie where the only thing you do is wait to see how the next person gets killed. In all fairness, it seems like the writers wanted to make a statement about karma, but somewhere after the restaurant scene, things went south, and Unhinged became unoriginal.
