WHAT’S IT ABOUT

It’s open season on Harley Quinn when her explosive breakup with the Joker puts a big fat target on her back. Unprotected and on the run, Quinn faces the wrath of narcissistic crime boss Black Mask, his right-hand man, Victor Zsasz, and every other thug in the city. But things soon even out for Harley when she becomes unexpected allies with three deadly women — Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Finally, a comic book movie that gives you exactly what you would expect from it.  At no time do Birds of Prey try to be more than what it is. The acting is cheesy and the dialog sounds like it’s straight out of the comic. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is perfect since she is the only character in this film that matters. Although, we get to see a few backstories for the characters that have that familiar comic book filler type of story like The Huntress. It’s too bad they couldn’t tell more backstories but Cassandra Cain deserves her own film.  As for the rest of the film, it’s crazy sadistic and violent in all the right places. I am so glad this is a rated “R” movie. Just imagine Deadpool as a woman without immortality. It’s like a visual guide through the mind of a psychopath. Not as insane as the Joker’s mind, but someone you would make sure was always in your sight. Nearly everything in this movie is a reference to something from the comics or subtle callbacks based on other actors in the film. For example, there’s a Moulin Rouge-like scene because of Ewan McGregor. Although it’s called Birds of Prey, it’s really all about Harley. She tells the story in her own crazy way. From the breakup with Mr. J to her full emancipation, as a lone criminal, thief, mercenary, badass, etc. For those that think they know about Harley, they will question the absence of Batman, The Joker, or any number of criminals and vigilantes in Gotham. Here’s your answer:  They were busy, leave it at that. This is Harley’s movie. If you are a true fan of the comics, you will appreciate all the nuances that guarantee the transfer from the pages to the big screen are intact for every character. If you’re not familiar with Harley Quinn, consider this movie your crash course.
