MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Unnecessarily foul and not as funny as it thinks it is. This film waste no time testing out its “R” rating. I think the second word said was a curse word from Mia Carter (Tiffany Haddish) as she woke up from a dream, followed by a slew of words that would make most guys say Damn, it’s too early for that shit. To top it off, she was on the phone with her bestie, Mel (Rose Byrne), an apparent complete opposite in every way. You soon find out Mia and Mel are best friends, roommates and have a business together. As the story progresses, each person at the girl’s company has a seemingly unimportant but significant role in maintaining Mia and Mel’s beauty shop. At the top of the list is Mel. She keeps track of the money but hates confrontation or having the unpleasant reality of upsetting her best friend, Mia. Because of this, their company is barely staying alive as Mel tries to hide the financial troubles they are going through. Mia, on the other hand, is loud somewhat bossy, speaks her mind but has no idea how to properly run a business. So it’s quite clear who the alpha (fe)male is. This leads to the fortunate or unfortunate meeting between the Mia, Mel, and business mogul Claire Luna (Salma Hayek). What seemed like a financial dream, especially for Mel, quickly turned into a legal nightmare with corporate takeover overtones. The sad fact that our two best friends didn’t know as much about each other as they thought they did only helped fuel the loss of their company. Claire Luna was able to use this knowledge to further divide Mia and Mel destroying a lifelong friendship. As far as the plot, it sounds like a decent storyline. The problem with this film is its delivery. It’s filled with unnecessary one-liners, unprovoked and unwarranted foul language and jokes that only work for a standup routine. Even the acting has a forced feel to it most of the time. What should have been a tremendous female comedy is nothing but a waste of everyone’s time, including the actors.
