MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a movie that tries so hard to pay homage to the original 1984 film, it becomes a two-hour-long where are they now. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t make Afterlife a movie that can stand on its own. As exciting as the opening was, it was too good to last. From there, the introduction of the main characters started to slowly suck the life out of Afterlife. Thirty minutes in, and I didn’t care anymore. The story was simple; The daughter of Egon Spengler, Callie, inherits her father’s farm, and as luck may have it, she and her two kids have just been evicted. Within minutes of arriving in Summerville, Oklahoma, every image becomes a callback to the original movie with some slight alterations. There are tiny Marshmellow Men instead of a giant Marshmellow Man. Echo-1 has a gunner seat. The ghost trap is built into an RC car that’s amazingly just as fast as a full-sized vehicle. The list is long, and I’m sure it looked good on paper, but the movie was unnecessarily drawn out just so they could add as many Ghostbuster references as possible. Ghostbusters is a 1984 film that doesn’t hold up that well 37 years later, and unless you were born at least fifteen years before the original movie, more than eighty percent of Ghostbusters: Afterlife will have no meaning to you. For those old enough to remember the 1984 film or those interested enough to have watched it on some form of media, my question to you would be why. At the time, it was an interesting movie filled with one-liners that most people still recite as comedic gold – it was not. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, by comparison to Ghostbusters, is not a bad movie, it’s just not worth the nearly four-decade wait for the same jokes that were not funny but slightly clever in ’84. If you want nostalgia, by all means, see this film. For everyone else, save your money.
