WHAT’S IT ABOUT
In the 1970s, young Gru tries to join a group of supervillains called the Vicious 6 after they oust their leader — the legendary fighter Wild Knuckles. When the interview turns disastrous, Gru and his Minions go on the run with the Vicious 6 hot on their tails. Luckily, he finds an unlikely source for guidance — Wild Knuckles himself — and soon discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
From the first time we saw them in 2010, the minions have been an adorably funny, scene-stealing force. So much so that they overshadowed the main characters just by being on the screen. This is why after Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, they got their first solo movie, Minions. Despicable Me 3 was next, followed by this second Minion film that takes the best parts from Despicable Me and Minions by giving the Minions what they need (an evil master) and giving its demographic what they didn’t know they needed (a very young Gru). The icing on the cake was placing this film in the 70s to satisfy the adults in the room. That said, the movie is still just as entertaining as the others in the series. Watching Gru as a kid is amusing, but the real focus has always been on the minions. They are their same lovable selves getting into and out of some serious situations. We know from previous films that Minions have survived on dumb luck, and The Rise Of Gru solidifies that fact. They can steal without getting caught. Fight creatures ten times their size, and take orders with the utmost respect and loyalty better than any henchman in villain history. This film is all about that loyalty aspect. The Minions must save their mini-boss, Gru, from certain death while Gru becomes despicable with the help of his favorite villain, Wild Knuckles. Many things happen, lessons are learned, and what should happen ultimately happens by the film’s end. But no amount of teachings, lessons realized, or story morals can distract from the pure entertaining nature of the Minions. They are so lovably cute that you miss the message they’re trying to send. Luckily, that doesn’t hurt the movie’s performance because kids will love it regardless.
