MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Although Superintelligence’s premise seems like it could be an exciting movie with a sci-fi twist, Melissa McCarthy’s presence changed that. Other than her film Can You Ever Forgive Me?, her library consists mainly of below-average comedies. By comparison, Melissa McCarthy is quickly becoming a female version of Pauly Shore (BioDome, Son-In-Law). Superintelligence is no different. It starts as the classic Melissa McCarthy not-so-funny comedy. An A.I. finds her intriguing and decides to study her and make a world-changing decision based on what it concludes. It does this by talking to her through various electronic devices until it has her full attention and understanding of its ultimatum’s seriousness. Once Carol (Melissa McCarthy) gets past the initial shock of talking to an A.I., the Superintelligence coerces her into rekindling a relationship with an old boyfriend. Suddenly, about twenty-five minutes in, this cutesy and awkwardly funny comedy slowly turns into an even worse romantic comedy. For the remaining 75 minutes, I get to see Melissa in another cringeworthy Lifetime type of movie that she is mostly known for. If you are a Melissa McCarthy fan, you already know what to expect from this film. She’s the unexpected underdog with the sad but relatable story that states how nothing is ever her fault and whatever happens was forced upon her (Tammy, Identity Thief, Spy, etc.). For what it’s worth, Superintelligence does showcase some positive movie tropes; money isn’t everything, love is not as easy as those 80’s films make it out to be, and in 2020 there can still be people that choose happiness above all else. In short, Superintelligence ends up being your standard romantic comedy with Artificial Intelligence as a wingman.
