MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Tom and Jerry have been around for over seventy years, so you would think the writers and producers should not need to work too hard to make something that appeals to all ages. But just like any series older than ten years, you will always need to reinvent yourself for your new and expanding audience, but without alienating you’re your loyal fanbase. For years, Tom and Jerry have never had to use the world’s current state to define its animated world. Yes, I know they have made references to their current state of affairs, but for the most part, they did things that could transfer into the next decade, or they tackled public domain properties like Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes. Not this time. Apparently, someone thought it would be a good idea to place these two iconic characters in the real and create a modern-day Who Framed Roger Rabbit type of scenario. It worked in that movie because they stuck to the theme of that period. The Tom and Jerry movie is all over the place. The first issue is with the opening. Having three pigeons flying through the city rapping the 1990 song Can I Kick It? by  A Tribe Called Quest felt too out of place. Personally, I love the song, it just didn’t fit the mood or theme of this movie. That may seem like I’m nit-picking or being unfair to the changing times, but this is not a hip-hop-themed film. Sadly, there isn’t a musical theme for this movie. They played everything from classical to pop without hesitation. The action was also inconsistent as they tried to blend 1940’s cartoon violence with 2021 rules within a live-action environment. None of the antics Tom and Jerry experienced were new, nor were they original. So who was this movie’s target audience? It was too stupid for an adult, and the nostalgia was lost on the opening credits. Teenagers definitely will not enjoy this, and younger kids have been taught (or rarely seen) violence, even in cartoons, is wrong. Let us not forget how much our government was against cartoon violence because of its imitative behavior. I would sure hate it if someone’s child got hurt while flying with their wings made out of roof shingles. Finally, this is not a Tom and Jerry movie, but rather a film with Tom and Jerry in it, and that’s the main problem.
