WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Defeated by members of the Losers’ Club, the evil clown Pennywise returns 27 years later to terrorize the town of Derry, Maine, once again. Now adults, the childhood friends have long since gone their separate ways. But when people start disappearing, Mike Hanlon calls the others home for one final stand. Damaged by scars from the past, the united Losers must conquer their deepest fears to destroy the shape-shifting Pennywise — now more powerful than ever.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

After 27 years, those scared kids come back as adults to the town of Derry to finish what they promised to do – kill Pennywise. The mood of the film is set just as early as it was in the first movie, and it still amazes me as to how violent it is. It’s basically one bloody kill away from being called a slasher film. There’s no shortage of jump scenes, and even when you know something is going to happen, nothing can prepare you for the obligatory scare you tried to prepare yourself for. IT Chapter Two does a much better job explaining (and sometimes over-explaining) the story. Each character has their own separate segment that gives a more detailed account of what went on when they were younger. After seeing what they went through, every last one of them should have been institutionalized. This does explain why they’re still targeted by Pennywise as adults. They never had the proper closure for the events that occurred, and now they have been given that chance. This time IT is more ruthless, and maniacal with his torture methods. Not to mention, he’s still upset (27 years’ worth of upset), from what happened in the first movie. Just like before, most of what they see or experience is all mental but trying to decipher between illusions and reality was the real trick. The advancements in computer graphics make this film look great, but the overkill moments create unwatchable scenarios for your average moviegoer. IT Chapter Two has a lot of moving parts that, ultimately, hurt the story. There are call-backs to the first film, re-tellings of each character’s traumatic childhood, and more background on the history and origin of IT. The ending was longer than it needed to be. Obviously, the director wanted the conclusion to be as big as possible, but it ends up being way too long and nearly creates a parody of itself. Based on how people judge films these days, IT Chapter Two will be considered a good (not great) movie for a lot of the wrong reasons.
