WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Academic overachievers Amy and Molly thought keeping their noses to the grindstone gave them a leg up on their high school peers. But on the eve of graduation, the best friends suddenly realize that they may have missed out on the special moments of their teenage years. Determined to make up for lost time, the girls decide to cram four years of not-to-be-missed fun into one night — a chaotic adventure that no amount of book smarts could prepare them for.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
This movie has been referred to as the female Superbad. Other than both movies involving a party, there’s no real connection. The guys in that movie were invited to a wild party, and it’s the last week of high school. The girls in Booksmart were not invited, and it was one day before graduation. There are so many differences; it makes me wonder why were they compared at all. Booksmart stands on its own as a quirky, funny film that will appeal to most females young and old, a few young men. Unfortunately, not too many other types of people will find this film enjoyable as it is very limited in the kind of audience it will attract. As a Black man, I thought it was OK, but it had nothing different to offer from what’s on regular TV. To be fair, the actors were great, and the story was believable, but it never piqued my interest, mainly because I’m not a twenty-something-year-old White person. I felt like an outsider while watching, and although I got the joke, I just didn’t care. Apparently, the writers didn’t care either. They didn’t deem it necessary for anyone past their target demographic to enjoy this movie. A story about two white girls trying to make up for lost time by partying on the night before graduation only has real meaning to other white girls and barely transcends past that. As I stated earlier, it’s obvious this movie caters to a small section of the population, and I’m not a part of it.
