WHAT’S IT ABOUT

The Men in Black have expanded to cover the globe but so have the villains of the universe. To keep everyone safe, decorated Agent H and determined rookie M join forces — an unlikely pairing that just might work. When aliens that can take the form of any human arrive on Earth, H and M embark on a globe-trotting adventure to save the agency — and ultimately the world — from their mischievous plans.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

What happened to the MIB? The first one was great. The second one was better and the third one was so-so. This fourth installment of the franchise sucks. They tried too hard to give us something we never asked for from actors that are considered the “new flavor of the month.” I love Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tessa Thompson as a Valkyrie warrior in Thor Ragnarok. They had great chemistry and the film was better with them in it. So where did all that chemistry go in Men in Black 4? Agent H (Chris) was too full of himself to be likable and Agent M (Tessa) was the new “please teach me although I know more than you” agent. It was a constant clash that never worked. It felt like there were two Will Smith’s competing against each other and Tommy Lee Jones was stuck in the office being played by Liam Neeson. To be fair, that was just one of the many problems with this movie. For starters, it began with “Brooklyn 1996,” where they show a past event in order to explain the reasons why a certain character (Agent M as a little girl named Molly) is the way she is. Then there’s the montage’ of Molly searching for what she saw as a little girl. Finally, the scene when she locates the MIB headquarters. All this happened fast and uneventful. As for Agent H, he was still gloating about an alien he destroyed years ago. That one single moment is what made him the self-absorbed jerk most of his fellow co-workers hate about him. So for the next hour, we get to watch him “Inspector Gadget” his way through nearly every situation. The characters H and M meet along the way are further distractions from a story that lacked substance. More aliens do not equal a better movie. In the first Men In Black, the aliens added to the story and helped further it along. This time, they’re used as comedic props and they still can’t help this movie. In the end, Men in Black: International was made for an audience with little to no previous film knowledge and even then it’s borderline MEH.
