When Charlotte decides to make a run for the presidency, she impulsively hires Fred as her speechwriter — much to the dismay of her trusted advisers.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
A Romantic comedy starring Seth Rogen And Charlize Theron. That’s a line just as hard to say as it is to see, but for some strange reason, it kind of works. Let me re-phrase that. It works on a very White scale, meaning it’s White people funny. I, like most of America, still don’t know why or how Seth Rogen is considered so funny. He has below-average looks, his delivery is sub-par, and he has a laugh that, once you hear it, good or bad, you never forget it. This is a far cry from what Hollywood considers leading man material. Fortunately for Seth, all of his average-ness works in his favor for this story. It’s like every joke was written to play off of the mediocre style that Mr. Rogen has “perfected” over the years. As this film plays out, you realize none of what is happening could ever happen in life. Because of this and the very forgettable acting, you are never fully engulfed in the story. Fred (Seth) as a diehard investigative journalist with a freedom fighter chip on his shoulder is so over-the-top it’s hard to take him seriously. On the flip side, Charlotte (Charlize) is the polar opposite as the U.S. Secretary of State decides to run for President. Once Fred and Charlotte start working together and ultimately hooking-up, all sense of reason flies out the window, and it becomes even harder to immerse yourself within the story. It was easier to believe Pokemon exist than the relationship between Seth and Charlize. Most would say, the relationship WAS the funny part. That’s a fair assessment, but this is not a ten-minute Saturday Night Live skit. Long Shot is a movie that needed more than a goofy laugh, a weird couple, and a few jokes if it planned on making an impression on the audience it is intended for.
