WHAT’S IT ABOUT

We all have a superhero inside of us — it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In 14-year-old Billy Batson’s case, all he needs to do is shout out one word to transform into the adult superhero Shazam. Still a kid at heart, Shazam revels in the new version of himself by doing what any other teen would do — have fun while testing out his newfound powers. But he’ll need to master them quickly before the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana can get his hands on Shazam’s magical abilities.

MOVIESinMO Review

Whoever DC hired (or fired), congratulations. DC now has three good superhero movies under its belt and it seems like they’ve finally found the secret to making comic book character movies truly entertaining. What’s the secret? Stop trying to be so damn serious (talking to you Batman), it’s a comic book. More than that, it’s a comic book for KIDS! When you take away everything that made these characters iconic (Man of Steel), you end up with crap. Shazam is a character from the ’40s. He’s a fourteen-year-old that gets his powers from an old man in a cave. In the comics, one of his enemies is a worm named Mr. Mind and his other enemies hate him mainly out of jealousy. Does this sound like something that should be taken seriously? NO. The writers at DC have finally figured this out and are starting to produce films accordingly. Shazam is a fun movie that’s not trying to be something it’s not. It makes sense in its own way, within its own world, and it works. Much like Spiderman into the Spider-verse, Shazam plays to its strengths. Billy Batson is fourteen and super-powered and does what almost any kid with newfound powers would do. So yes, a lot of kiddy things are going to happen – they’re kids and like all good comic books, there’s always a moral. Be good, not bad, evil never wins, family first, blah, blah, blah – you get it. Finally, Shazam is a definite hit and by Hollywood law (or whatever scale they use), there will be a sequel. Oh, by now everyone should know, stay and see the post-credits scenes.
