WHAT’S IT ABOUT
A joyous family reunion becomes a hilarious nightmare as Madea and the crew travel to backwoods Georgia, where they find themselves unexpectedly planning a funeral that might unveil unsavory family secrets
MOVIESinMO Review
After fourteen years and ten Madea films, Tyler Perry says he’s done. A Madea Family Funeral is the eleventh and final Madea movie and in my opinion, he should have outsourced some of the work. Mr. Perry writes, directs, and stars in all of these films including the plays, but he’s only human and he should have taken a break. A Madea Family Funeral is a perfect example of what happens when you don’t take a break. Most of the dialog between the characters seems forced and a bit stiff at times. Whenever Madea’s on the screen, everything relies on wordplay and slapstick-type humor. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, considering Madea was created that way from the beginning. The main problem here is the lack of a moral. This is the one thing that gives Tyler Perry’s films validation. His movies have always had over-the-top comedy BUT no matter what was happening, there was a lesson to be learned as the film progressed. In this film, there’s nothing until the last fifteen minutes. The rest of the movie is pretty basic and if you’ve seen one of his movies, you know what that means. Madea, Aunt Bam, and Hattie might as well be a female version of the Three Stooges. They were funny but as I stated earlier, lots of talk with absurd physical comedy. In the end, Madea’s last film is more about how many jokes can be said in 110 minutes than teaching right from wrong.
