WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Frances finds a handbag on the New York subway and promptly returns it to Greta, an eccentric French piano teacher who loves tea and classical music. Having recently lost her mother, young Frances strikes up a seemingly harmless friendship with the lonely and kindly widow who enjoys her company. But when Greta’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and obsessive, Frances does whatever it takes to end the toxic relationship before things spiral out of control.
MOVIESinMO Review
So long, so boring, so stupid. There has to be an award for the most deceptive trailer ever. The only thing this movie teaches us is not to be friendly and mind your own business. Once things finally got started, meaning once the girl on the subway (Frances) returned the purse to the nice, sweet French lady that left it behind (Greta), things should have happened to justify how incredibly slow this film is. That was not the case. The film continues to drag along by introducing friends, workplace, and all other insignificant details. Some might think it’s suspenseful and they would be wrong. If anyone thinks Greta has a chance at being scary, this must be their first movie. I have watched and like stupid movies before but those films knew they were stupid and therefore they are rated differently. Greta thinks it’s a smart, fresh thriller with aspects that could really happen. The answer is no, no, and hell no. For the things in this movie to happen, Frances would need to be extremely naive with a slight case of brain damage. As for Greta, any old deranged rich lady could be her. Lastly, for this movie to work, everyone on the subway would need to ignore the purse she left sitting on the seat in the open and let that “not so smart” girl (Frances) pick it up. Then, instead of trying to call, mail or give to the police, she hand delivers it to Greta personally. So should she say here’s your purse and go home OR go in, sit down, and have some coffee? You know what she did, and this is the setup for all of the other impossible things that happen in this movie. Just one stupid coincidence after another.
