MOVIESinMO Review
Everything’s not awesome for the citizens of Bricksburg. This time around, their world and its citizens look like a Lego version of Mad Max. The world is in constant turmoil because anything nice will be attacked and destroyed. Everyone has become a hardened version of their previous self. Everyone except Emmet. Through all the negativity, all the seemingly hopeless situations, he’s still the same happy-go-lucky optimist that believes everything will always be awesome. Even after Lucy and the rest of his closest friends are captured and taken away by a new threat, General Sweet Mayhem. Mayhem gets her orders from a shape-shifting alien named Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi. The Queen wants to marry Batman and the rest of Emmet’s friends are all on a separate but somehow connected mission. Meanwhile, Emmet, under the leadership of his new friend, Rex Dangervest, is told (once again) he needs to toughen up and realize that everything is not awesome. Reluctantly, he tries, and this begins the rescue mission of his friends and every other Brickburg citizen. Lego Movie 2 continues the story that started five years ago without missing a beat. They upped the antics, raised the bar on storytelling, and more than doubled the star voice actors, including cameos. The best thing about Lego films is they never lose sight of the overall moral of the story. This is why these movies are so funny, so relevant, and so important in today’s society. They’re silly with a purpose and teach kids without preaching to them. If you loved the first movie, you’re guaranteed to love this one.
