WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Six adventurous strangers travel to a mysterious building to experience the escape room — a game where players compete to solve a series of puzzles to win $1 million. What starts out as seemingly innocent fun soon turns into a living nightmare as the four men and two women discover each room is an elaborate trap that’s part of a sadistic game of life or death.

MOVIESinMO Review

With Hollywood doing so many remakes and reboots, it was only a matter of time until someone found a way to mash the past horror and thriller films into one successful film. Originality is hard to find in the entertainment industry, and Escape Room is no exception. While it’s very obvious they “stole” from at least six other movie franchises, this is not a parody or a cheap wanna-be horror film. Escape Room uses its nearly 2-hour play time to try and give each character a backstory and still use psychological trickery to move the story forward. Since this is a horror film with pieces taken from other movies, it’s filled with some of the same clichés but with a twist. Each of the six characters has very distinct personalities, and as the movie progresses, you can almost empathize with them. Taylor, the main character, is socially awkward and smart,  Danny is the escape room expert and nerd, Ben is the loser that stays with his mother, Jason’s an investor with an attitude, Amanda has physical and psychological issues, and Mike’s trucker in need of cash. The rooms they are forced to go through are all unique in their own way, consisting of fire, ice, gas, and an upside-down bar. If you’re curious as to what films were copied, I’m sure there will not be a shortage of websites willing to expose this movie as totally unoriginal. Those people didn’t see the movie, are full of crap and probably think Mike Myers and Jason Vorhees are the same people. As I stated earlier, it uses other movies as reference only. For example, there’s a puzzle box that looks like something out of Hellraiser. Being trapped in a room could be The Cube, Domain, etc. Overall, Escape Room does use other films’ ideas, but they are able to ad suspense and trauma in ways the other films ignore. It’s a new year, and we really need a new horror franchise.
