WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people — and then the surface world. Standing in his way is Aquaman, Orm’s half-human, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne. With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlan and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep.

MoviesInMo Review

They did it . . . again (finally). Warner made another hit superhero movie. Aquaman is well worth the wait, although it’s not perfect, Jason Momoa has so much personality, the highs definitely outweigh the lows. Since this is the first Aquaman film, it’s the obligatory origin story, and for some reason, it’s not as boring as I thought it would be. We see how his parents met and why they split up. We also, see Arthur as a kid in school, and we see him train in several parts of the film. After the initial “this is how I got here” introduction, it’s time to find out what type of person Arthur is an adult. Aquaman does a good job showing off Arthur’s strength and moral compass, while at the same time introducing every major player in the Aquaman universe. The battles are huge since the majority of them happen in the ocean. This movie is rated PG-13, but the fight scenes and amount of death shown throughout puts Aquaman at an almost R rating. I loved it, but I’m sure some parent somewhere will complain about how violent this movie is. Whatever the case, Aquaman is a damn good superhero movie with only a few WTF moments that don’t take away from the film.
