What’s It About

Set in the near future, the film chronicles the odyssey of 30 young men and women who are sent deep into space on a multi-generational mission in search of a new home. The mission descends into madness, as the crew reverts to its most primal state, not knowing if the real threat they face is what’s outside the ship or who they’re becoming inside it.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

In the year 2064, our resources are sparse, so the most brilliant minds and the governments of every nation came up with the most absurd plan in history. They “created” 30 humans via doners in a lab and raised them as astronauts. The children would never go outside and never be exposed to the real world because you can’t miss what you never had, right.? From there, they would send these nine-year-old kids on an 85-year mission in hopes their grandkids would terraform a newly discovered planet. How did this film get approved? I’m feeling dumber just mentioning the premise. I should have known better since the writer, Neil Burger is the same person behind 2014’s Divergent, and it shows. It’s his standard style. Young adults, little to no adults, and some “bigger” plan that will help all of humankind. So, of course, they had to add in a political conflict and show how easy it is to start a riot, create doubt, and expose humanity’s ugly side. To accomplish this, they introduced a blue liquid that everybody drinks after their meal. The drink suppresses their emotions, aggressions, and anything else considered controversial. When one of them stops drinking it, he becomes aggressive, both physically and emotionally. This starts a chain reaction that carries this film to its insignificant last scene. Voyagers has many things going against it, but the main issue is how slow this movie is. It takes over an hour explaining and setting up a climax that has no value. The certainty that something was going to go wrong is the whole idea of Voyagers. Still, the events leading up to every mishap the kids encounter is a forced scenario that’s supposed to move the story along but only adds to the horrible cringeworthy script the actors are forced to repeat. The whole experiment raises questions both ethical and logical. These thirty teens are supposed to produce children artificially, and their kids are supposed to be the ones to colonized a newly discovered and uncharted planet. None of them have any survival skills other than the ongoing repair of the spacecraft. Ultimately, Voyagers is a horrible movie that leaves you with a ton of questions regardless if you can sit through the entire film or not.
