What’s It About

Tyler joins his friend on a trip to the Catskills for a weekend birthday party with several people he doesn’t know. As soon as they get there, it’s clear that (1) he’s the only black guy, and (2) it’s going to be a weekend of heavy drinking. Although Tyler is welcomed, he can’t help but feel uneasy in “Whitesville.” The combination of all the testosterone and alcohol starts to get out of hand, and Tyler’s precarious situation starts to feel like a nightmare.

MOVIESinMO Review

This movie is nothing that I expected. The plot makes it seems like horror or a drama considering it’s about one Black guy surrounded by drunk White people at a party. The premise alone leaves so many questions unanswered and more than I would care to ask. In the first fifteen minutes of this film, I had had enough. It was very uncomfortable to watch the main character, Tyler, as he tried to relate to the friends of his friend. After suffering through this almost ninety-minute Sundance movie, it was very apparent that this was more of a social experiment than an entertaining one. Someone must have said, “Hey, lets put a Black guy in a room full of drunk White guys and let the imagination of the audience tell the story.” That’s what this movie is, and that’s all it is. I know most independent films try to have some deep underlining message but Tyrel is not that deep and the message is lost in the delivery. Maybe if this was a time before our current President or current immoral acts against people of color, this film might have served a purpose but not now. Tyrel is a waste of time that wants to prove a point no one cared about.
