WHAT’S IT ABOUT
From the director of Double Take, Middle Men, and The Poison Rose comes this stylish, glossy action-thriller starring Morgan Freeman (Se7en) and Ruby Rose (“Orange Is the New Black”) that shows what desperation can drive a person to do. A mother, Victoria (Rose), is trying to put her dark past as a Russian drug courier behind her, but retired cop Damon (Freeman) forces Victoria to do his bidding by holding her daughter hostage. Now, Victoria must use guns, guts, and a motorcycle to take out a series of violent gangsters — or she may never see her child again.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
There was a time when around 2 or 3 in the morning, the movie selections on broadcast TV were somewhat horrible. So you either watched a bad movie or watched an infomercial. If Vanquish were your movie options, you would gladly look at whatever they were selling in the infomercial – twice. Yes, Vanquish is that bad. It felt like every actor phoned in their performance. They didn’t act badly. They just had that “I’ll do this until something better comes along” look. To be fair, the actual script was a bit light on substance. The story (if you want to call it that) is mainly about a highly decorated retired officer named Damon (Freeman), now in a wheelchair, his caretaker Victoria (Rose), her young daughter, and a slew of bad guys, dirty cops, and a priest. That information alone is screaming; DON’T WATCH THIS MOVIE. For reasons unknown, Damon holds Victoria’s daughter hostage and forces her to pick up his obviously dirty money from five different locations if she wants to see her child again. Victoria agrees, and for the rest of the film, she travels from one gang-infested area to the next. The movie looks like an amateur attempt at making a music video with America’s Funniest Home Videos budget. Vanquish is supposed to be an action/thriller, but nothing is thrilling about it, and the action is subpar at best. Other than a weak story, the way Victoria collects the money isn’t believable. She collects the cash wearing a body camera so Damon can see everything from his wheelchair. She also has two guns on her waist at her back. When did dealers say it was OK to record them or enter with weapons? Why are the crooks such horrible shots, and why do all of her shots kill? Before the end of the film, another factor was added to offer redemption but made the movie even worse. Vanquish is 90-minutes of the worst usage of an actor’s talent this year so far.
