MOVIESinMO REVIEW

It’s what we expect from Marvel. Great acting, fantastic cast with a few familiar faces. Spectacular visuals and special effects. All wrapped up with a 150 million dollar budget. Since this is the origin of the ten rings and Shang-Chi, we get the whole story, complete with practically every chance to tie it in with the rest of the Marvel universe. Starting with Xu Wenwu, Shang-Chi’s father, who either found or stole the ten rings over a thousand years ago. As the story moves on, more and more information is told about the father, but this is Shang-Chi’s film, so the majority is on him. Present-day Shang-Chi and best friend Kathy work as valets, much to the disappointment of their families. Then it happened. The fighting, the action, the quick one-liners, and all the hidden secrets came to light. It’s the reason Marvel films are what they are, and Legend of the Ten Rings uses every Marvel trope in their library. For fans of the comic, don’t see this movie. You will be disappointed. For fans of the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is the same. Shang-Chi is a fully trained martial arts master running from his destiny. He has mystical powers yet to be discovered by him. His father has a very powerful weapon that, for whatever reason, gives him immortality. In other words, T’Challa finally accepts his destiny and completes his training. Peter Parker is starting to understand the potential of his powers. And Thor’s father can now give him that all mighty weapon to help channel his energies. That’s right, Shang-Chi is all that and Asian too. But for those paying attention, I thought the ten rings were supposed to be about that character from Iron-Man 3, The Mandarin. Instead, we get a whole new person with the weakest tie-in ever, and we’re forced to just go with it. So basically, it’s the same formula with a different lead, and since the leads are Asian, the fight scenes are all martial arts. Overall, It’s an enjoyable film if you’re not sick of Marvel, and like all of their films, they are connected, so you will need to see them all if you want to know or understand the whole story. Lastly, the climactic fight at the end nearly ruined the entire build-up by being a bit too cartoony (*cough-Dragonball Z-cough*), and don’t forget to stay for the post-credit scenes.
