MoviesInMo REVIEW
The Oath is a very boring and very dark comedy about United States citizens seemingly forced to sign a document called “The Patriot’s Oath” pledging their loyalty to the country. In the first 30 – 40 minutes we meet husband and wife couple Chris (Ike Barinholtz) and Kai (Tiffany Haddish). They were looking at the TV when the announcement of The Oath was made. This should have been were the funny stuff happens – it was not. It was so slow and very painful to look at. So much so, I actually thought about leaving. Barinholtz and Haddish are great separately, but together – not so much. Everything on the screen during this time was so uncomfortably awkward. The chemistry between the two main actors off, and the script was worse. It seemed like they were making it up on the spot, and I wouldn’t be surprised if later we found out it was mostly improvised. The deadline to sign the Oath was on Black Friday forcing the only “good parts” of the movie to happen on Thanksgiving. Chris and Kai are hosting, and this is how we meet the family. Chris’s brother and girlfriend (could have been his wife but at this point, I really didn’t care) are first to arrive as the awkwardness continues. After Chris’s mom, dad, and sister arrive, things start to get a little better Watching this family interact was like being at a relatives house you’ve never met and forced to start a conversation. The only part of The Oath worth seeing was when two government Agents show up. If you must see this movie, the agents will ease some of the awful pain of having sat through ninety minutes of unnecessary crap.
