MOVIESinMO REVIEW
For those weak hearts, and a real fear of the church, don’t see this movie. If I were a teenager, The Nun would have scared the crap out of me. As an adult, it only scared half the crap out of me. There are loads of “jump” scenes throughout the film that set the mood for what can only get worse. There are plenty of plot holes but I’m sure the director wasn’t trying to win an Oscar. The Nun is a horror movie and it has a lot of horror in it. Ultimately it is a good movie that could have been a great movie if it didn’t have so many horror clichés in it. Nothing upsets me more than stupid people in a horror movie doing stupid things. “Hey, what’s that noise?” “I don’t know let’s go check it out”. You get the picture. So the whole movie is set in 1952 Romania. Evil wants to take over and good stops it but not without paying the ultimate price. Word gets around of what happened and the Vatican gets involved. They send a priest named Father Burke along with a soon-to-be a nun, Sister Irene. Up to this point, the movie was believable. Once Sister Irene and Father Burke arrived at Cârța Monastery (yes, it’s a real place), they eventually meet Frenchie, the one who saw and spread the bad news regarding the monastery. This is where the movie turns into the typical horror film and two of our three main people start acting stupid. They see things, they get chased, they get abducted and they get wounded – several times. So why are they still there? Because the Vatican wants answers. Movie reaction, “Let’s find out what’s going on”. Real-life reaction, “If they want to know, they can come here and find out”. If that were to happen the movie would have been really short. As it stands, The Nun is a predictably fun horror film and if you’ve seen the other movie in the Conjuring universe, why not see this one.
