What’s It About

Hiding out for years in an isolated cabin, the Blind Man has taken in and raised a young girl orphaned from a house fire. Their quiet existence is shattered when a group of kidnappers show up and take the girl, forcing the Blind Man to leave his safe haven to save her.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Based on the first film’s concept, I didn’t think it was possible to produce a sequel that would be any good or make sense. I was mostly right. Don’t Breathe 2 isn’t really a sequel, but more like a movie that just happens to have the same lead character. The first movie made the blind veteran (Norman Nordstrom) out to be a horrible person living alone and minding his own business. Then some almost adults decided to do a home invasion and rob him of the money they thought he must have. In part 2, he’s military training a little girl that lives with him. He has a trained dog and lives in a big house in the Detroit suburbs. Like the first film, I have no idea how he’s supporting himself, but he does not have a shortage of funds. Eventually, you find out about the little girl, and once you do, many things start to make sense, but not much. The biggest issue is calling this part 2. On its own, it’s a better movie, but that is not the case. In this “sequel,” the blind guy has something some bad guys want. Last time it was money. This time it’s the girl. So now the once horrible loner is a caring father figure. He does what he can to protect his “daughter,” and most of that time, he does it better than a person with perfect vision. That’s the problem. Norman does some incredible things even an eagle-eyed person would have a hard time doing. The action is good, and the story is believable, but unless Norman is supposed to be the new Daredevil, he’s doing a bit too much for a blind man. In general, as great as Don’t Breathe 2 wants to be, it’s kind of hard to stay devoted to the story when the only blind character appears to see quite well. In the end, things happen the way you think they would, and you leave the theater with a feeling of empty accomplishment, questioning yourself if it was worth the hype.
