What’s It About
After David Kim (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened, and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Another movie as seen from the point-of-view of laptops, security cameras, and smartphones. Unlike the predecessors that used this format, this time, it works. Seeing this thriller unfold via computer monitors is a harsh reminder of how reliant we are on technology. We all use or have used some sort of social media and Searching uses several of them in the frantic hunt for David’s 16-years old daughter. Searching does a fantastic job introducing the Kim family and how much they love each other individually and as a family. By using images and videos, we see David’s daughter Margot grow from an infant to the smart and talented 16-year old that this movie is focused on. The day she comes up missing may be hard to watch for anyone that has a real-life experience on the subject as the portrayal in the film is very well acted. Besides the obvious reason for the film, it also exposes how easy it is to learn about people you’ve never met and more than likely, will never know. By using programs like Facebook, Tumblr, and FaceTime, Margot’s father is able to find out things about his daughter he never knew. As David continues to search for his daughter, all perceptions of his world fall apart. Did she run away or was she kidnapped? By all means, see this movie, it will change the way you think about social media and what most of us think we know about our kids.
