What’s It About
Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, when the Man of Steel and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a ragtag group of animals to master their own newfound powers for a rescue mission.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Another Johnson and Hart team up and another hit. DC League of Super-Pets is all about the pets of our favorite DC heroes. Actually, it’s about Superman’s pet dog, Krypto, and a bunch of rescue animals that suddenly get superpowers. This new “team” of animals includes a pig with low self-esteem, a turtle with poor eyesight, a squirrel afraid he might screw up, a dog that has escaped multiple times, and a super-intelligent guinea pig, once owned and tested on by Lex Luthor. Are there things in this film that may seem questionable for a kid’s movie? My answer is both yes and no. Super-Pets is rated PG, and because of this, there will be something in this kid’s movie a parent might disagree with. Every animated kid’s film has to go through the same scrutiny from some overzealous mother or overly concerned father. To those people, I say stop it, shut up and let your children grow up in the real world. For whatever reason, DC League of Super-Pets has two scenes where a swear word was bleeped, while in another scene, one of the pets was talking about their previous owners, and they show a picture of a 2-woman couple (representation is everything). As the story progresses, you learn how unaware Krypto is of how the real world works. This includes his master’s need for human companionship. More importantly, you discover how self-centered Krypto is mainly because of his inability to understand everyday situations. Even the bad pet, that super intelligent guinea pig, is a mirror of an actual human condition. It believes Lex truly loves and cares for her. Sort of an animal version of erotomania. So it’s no surprise that this movie is about finding and believing in your true self. Each character represents an emotional imbalance that prevents us from being all we could be, with or without superpowers. The movie is emotionally grounded but still filled with enough one-liners and adult innuendos to keep the parents in the room entertained without taking away from the kid-friendly, morally loaded story.
