MOVIESinMO REVIEW

From the first one in the franchise to this one, Thor has gone through some significant changes. In 2011 the first film was the basic “follow the comics” type of story. Sadly, the second movie followed in that slow and tedious Shakespearian style. Then it got good in 2017 with Thor: Ragnarok. Now it’s 2022, and the powers that be took a turn for confusion. There are elements of his 2011 self (the speech, the hair, the clothes) and pieces from his Ragnarok days (making jokes, misunderstanding euphemisms). Love and Thunder blends those elements along with his love for Jane Foster, his newfound friendship with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and tons of out-of-place visual gags. But wait, there’s more. The rock guy Korg narrates as if it’s a bedtime story. Thor has a Rocky-style montage to get back in shape, and his attitude towards everything makes him a very self-absorbed borderline narcissist. In this movie, Thor has become a literal and figurative caricature. There are several scenes where he is talking to his weapon that possess the essence of slapstick humor. Thor: Love and Thunder has so much comedy that you forget the primary purpose is to stop Gorr the God Butcher, the only real serious part of the movie. Gorr lost faith in the Gods and has sworn to kill them using a weapon called the Necrosword. His story is heartbreaking, and this would have been a damn good film if they had stuck with that momentum. Instead,     the director, Taika Waititi, couldn’t decide a direction. Love and Thunder has comedy, heart, slapstick, drama, and romance, to name a few. It’s a movie that makes sense in parts. As a whole, it’s all over the place. It’s like trying to understand a story being told by a kindergartner. As an adult, This is a very immature movie with misplaced adult elements. For younger viewers, it has enough action to win them over. As a paying moviegoer, Thor: Love and Thunder should have been a Disney+ release only.
